Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14 (1912), is a sonata composed for solo piano. The sonata was first performed on February 5, 1914 in Moscow with the composer performing. Prokofiev dedicated the sonata to his friend and fellow student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Maximilian Schmidthof, who committed suicide in 1913.〔Boris Berman, ''Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas: A Guide for the Listener and the Performer'' (Yale University Press, 2008), p. 58.〕
